Developmental Edit
What is it?
A developmental edit focuses on the 'big picture' elements of your novel, including structure, plot, pacing, characters, voice and worldbuilding. The aim is to make sure the story itself is in the best possible shape (no plotholes, solid worldbuilding, rounded characters) before your start to refine your prose in copy edits and proofreading.
Who's it for?
The best time to get a developmental edit is once you've finished your novel and have worked through your own edits. It can also be a good idea to get feedback from peers, like critique partners or beta readers, before getting a professional developmental edit. This means you've taken the novel as far as you can by yourself.

Although you want your manuscript to be in good shape, you want to do a developmental edit before you work on copy edits. This is because often a developmental edit will result in cuts, additions and other wider-scale changes that can mean the hard work you've done in really refining your prose will be wasted.

A developmental edit is a great option whether you're looking to self publish or go the traditional route.
What do I get?
As with all my services, you're get personal and comprehensive feedback that'll give you the confidence and tools to flourish. With a developmental edit you'll get:

-
In-line comments on your manuscript detailing thoughts and highlighting strong elements and places you can strengthen
-
A follow-up 60 minute Zoom call to go through the feedback and where I can answer any questions you might have
How much is it?
The cost of a developmental edit depends on the length of your novel. Please get in touch to discuss pricing.
How do I get started?
It's fantastic to hear you'd like to work with me! To get started, simply get in touch on the button below with details of your project and when you'd be looking to book in. You don't need to have finished manuscript before getting in touch - developmental reports are often booked up many months in advance.

Once I hear from you, we can chat further about how everything works, your expectations and more about your project. This is to make sure we're a good match for each other. If we are, then I'll send through a contract and reserve your spot. You'll need to get your manuscript over to me by a pre-agreed deadline. Developmental edits are in depth pieces of work and take 6-8 weeks for an average length novel (90-110K words). I'll update you throughout this time to let you know how everything is going. Once I've returned your report and you've had time to read and digest the information, I'm available for a follow up Zoom call to go through any thoughts, ideas or questions you have.
